POST 00468E : ELIMINATION OF POLIO FROM AFRICA BY 2005
2 July 2002
_____________________________________________________________
Many of you have followed with interest the meeting of the Heads of State
and Government of the Group of Eight (G8) recently held in Kananaskis,
Canada. The initiative taken by African States in adopting the New
Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) extended first at Genoa in
July 2001, was presented to the G8 leaders by its four promoters,
Presidents Wade of Sénégal, Bouteflika of Algeria, Obasanjo of Nigeria and
Mbeki of South Africa.
The G8 leaders accepted the NEPAD and adopted an initial response, the
"Africa Action Plan". Following soon after the EURO certification
announcement of last week, there is yet another piece of extraordinary news
on polio eradication work contained in this Action Plan.
Chapter VI of the Action Plan is devoted to Health :"VI. Improving Health
and Confronting HIV/AIDS". I reproduce here point 6.3 of the Action Plan
concerning immunization and polio elimination :
6.3 Accelerating the elimination and mitigation in Africa of polio, river
blindness and other diseases or health deficiencies – including by:
* Providing, on a fair and equitable basis, sufficient resources to
eliminate polio by 2005; and,
* Supporting relevant public-private partnerships for the immunization
of children and the elimination of micro-nutrient deficiencies in Africa.
This is exciting news ! And those who would like to explore further the
Summit's conclusions and the Africa Action Plan are invited to consult the
Government of Canada G8 Summit site at the following URL :
http://www.g8.gc.ca
The text of the NEPAD is also available in downloadable PDF format on that
site.
All information is available both in French and English versions.
Good surfing!
