Greetings Colleagues,

The American Immunization Registry Association (AIRA) is proud to introduce and release the newly developed guide Patient Status in Immunization Information Systems.

AIRA leveraged a community-informed approach to examine implementation barriers and challenges to develop recommendations for patient status management in an IIS. The main purpose of the guide is to bridge the gap between currently published guidance on patient status and its actual implementation by IIS. This guide offers practical guidelines for providers, public health entities, and IIS to use in implementing and managing patient status. Challenges and recommendations related to IIS functionality, ease of use, implementation, and policy are described for both provider and geographic jurisdiction level issues. A secondary purpose of the guide is to address the issue of denominator inflation experienced by many IIS.

The primary audiences for the guide include IIS managers, IIS staff with responsibility for data quality, and Immunization program staff that work with providers, such as in Vaccines for Children (VFC) and quality improvement work. The document may also be valuable to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Immunization Program Managers, IIS vendors, EHR vendors, jurisdiction-specific information technology staff, national organizations supporting IIS, health care providers, and other partners and policy makers.

A community webinar was conducted on October 28 to introduce this guide and the recorded link can be found by using the “webinars” filter in the AIRA repository.
