Companion SOGI technical guidance document now available

In June 2022, HL7 International released the SOGI Data Exchange Profiles as a short-term technical solution in response to legislation proposed or passed by some US states and cities requiring collection of SOGI information. The Standards and Interoperability Steering Committee (SISC) commissioned a small working group of 20+ members from the IIS community to review the short-term solution and prepare a technical guidance document to support IIS that must receive or send SOGI information. In December 2022, SISC published Guidance on Messaging Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) in AIRA’s repository. It was recommended to use in jurisdictions that choose to collect SOGI information or where law or policy require the collection of SOGI information.

During discussions to produce the SOGI technical guidance document, the working group identified the need to distinguish messaging a patient’s preferred name from other legal or alias names. The preferred name is the name that should be used when addressing or referencing the patient. The preferred name enables care providers to use the name that is chosen by the person. Ultimately, this will assist with improved quality of care, reduced clinician burden, and less fragmentation of a person’s clinical records. AIRA is happy to announce that the SOGI companion document, Guidance on Messaging Preferred Name of Patient, is now available in AIRA’s repository.
