Resource State of inequality: Childhood immunization
Purpose Identification of inequalities in childhood immunization coverage in 69 low- and middle-income countries and analysis of trends in immunization inequalities over the last 10 years.
Content Data on five childhood immunization indicators covering 69 countries is disaggregated by four dimensions of inequality. The report is accompanied by electronic interactive visuals, which enables further exploration of the data.
Expected outcomes Indicates there is less inequality now than 10 years ago, but further improvement is needed to lessen inequalities related to economic status and mother’s education. The report could assist to generate a more evidence based global, regional and national pro equity policy.
Strengths The report clarifies that inequalities related to household economic status and mother’s education were the most significant with regards to immunisation inequalities. Contraints/Limitations (a) A major limitation of the report is the exclusion of countries that did not participate in DHS and MICS. (b) The report can establish associations between social exposures and health inequalities but cannot generate knowledge on the community and health system contextual factors that are contributing to inequalities.(c) The data has limitations with regards to sample size, so there is a limitation with undertaking sub national analysis of data.
Why use it (a) Zero dose and under immunised: Can be used as an information resource on immunisation inequities to inform development of pro equity immunisation policies and strategies.
(b) Highlights inequities in health care access and outcomes related to economic status, education, location.
Who should use it Policy makers, planners, and educators, as a an educational resource to understand the determinants of immunisation inequities.
